If you’re leaving Manchester over the winter break, don’t forget to keep your student house in check, safe and ready for your return in the new year. Here are some tips to help you avoid any unwanted surprises:
- Check the fridge before you leave
Make sure to clear out any food that could go off. Particularly dairy, meat and fish; they won’t fair well over the holidays. - Save energy
Turn off electronics at the wall and unplug them to make sure nothings left on that could add unnecessary costs to your bills. This also prevents the risks of any electrical fires. However do not unplug your fridge and freezer, this will leak water and could be a potential fire hazard. - Lock up your doors and windows
Not wanting to scaremonger, but unfortunately student burglaries are quite common over the winter break. This if often due to properties not being left properly secured, or expensive electrical equipment has been left on display.
Although it might not be possible to take all of your valuables home with you, make sure they’re out of sight or locked away. Your home studio is likely to attract unwanted attention if visible from outside. If you’re the last person to leave, double check all of the doors and windows are locked properly. - Rubbish Bins
Make sure you clear out all of your rubbish and recycling. You will also need to check when the last rubbish collection is before you leave if you have wheelie bins. Be mindful of where bins are positioned as leaving them under a window could create an opportunity for burglars. - Driving home for Christmas
Or train-ing, or however you’re planning to travel home, make sure you plan ahead as there is often disruptions around Christmas due to the higher numbers of people travelling.
