With the clocks going back last Sunday, the days will start to get darker much earlier. So here’s a reminder of things you can do to stay safe during the autumn and winter.
With plenty of events and things happening in Manchester, make sure to also read our article on ‘Staying safe on a night out.’
Stay alert
While a lot of this may seem like common sense, it never hurts to have reminders. Keep you’re belongings out of sight, and be aware of your surroundings, especially when it’s dark. Like any big city, theft happens, but if you’re phone is out of sight, in your pocket or bag, you can keep the risk to a minimum.
If you’re listening to music, or wearing noise cancelling headphones make sure you change the settings/volume so you can still hear your surroundings. We’d also recommend staying to well-lit roads and pavements as you travel around.
Cycling safety
If you’re cycling to and from campus now is a good time to give your bike an M.O.T. Make sure your bike is road worthy, especially with winter just around the corner. Check your tyres, making sure they can cope with icy or snowy roads, and invest in a good set of lights to increase your visibility. With darker mornings and evenings it’s also worth making sure you can be seen on the roads with high-vis clothing. Finally, while we always recommend wearing a helmet, colder weather increases the risk of accidents so it’s an even more important one during the colder months to keep yourself safe.
If you want to find out more about cycling safely around Manchester, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Bee Active Scheme has lots of advice on bike maintenance, safety, and even has free cycle courses.
Travelling with friends
If you’re going out in the evening , check-in with friends to see if you can go together. Especially if you’re planning a night out, chat to your mates and see how they are getting to and from wherever you are going, and keep an eye out for anyone travelling on their own.
If you’re going somewhere unfamiliar plan your route ahead of time, so you’re not having to work out where you’re going later on (and possibly while your under the influence). When heading out you should also let someone know where you are going, and what time you expect to be back. There’s also lots apps where you can share your location with someone.
Looking after yourself
There’s lots to do and enjoy in Manchester over the winter months, just remember to keep looking after yourself and your friends.
