As the winter break approaches, it’s tempting to shut the laptop, pack away the instruments, close the DAWs, and disappear into your duvet, mince pies and movies, and honestly, you deserve that rest!
But if you prep a little before you head off, you can come back in January feeling refreshed, musically inspired and creatively fired up. (As well as getting that much needed reset!)
Whether you’re staying in Manchester or heading home, here’s how to keep that musical spark alive over the Christmas holidays.
Organise your projects before the break
Before you switch off, be sure to tidy up your sessions, label your files, and back up your projects. You’ll thank yourself later when you don’t have to untangle the file “mix_v7_final_FINAL2.wav” in January.
Tip: You could create a ‘Holiday Folder’ with anything you might want to revisit or finish casually over the break.
Make a ‘Winter Listening’ list
If you’re heading home without access to studio gear, use this time to recharge your ears.
Make some new playlists that inspire you, filled with new releases, classic albums, or even your friends’ tracks. This might generate some fresh ideas for you to create when you return.
Pack light, but smart
If you’re travelling, bring something small that keeps you creating. Such as an idea’s notebook, headphones, a mini MIDI controller, or even just your phone.
Tip: Apps like Koala Sampler, FL Studio Mobile, BandLab, or GarageBand are fun and perfect for jotting down ideas while you’re away from your proper studio setup.
Set yourself a low pressure creative goal
Give yourself one chill, achievable goal for the break, something like ‘write one new riff’ ‘finish one mix,’ or ‘record one field sound.’
You don’t need a full project plan, just something that keeps you musically inspired, connected to your creative flow, and helps you remain switched on.
Use downtime for inspiration
Winter can be the best time to reset creatively. Inspiration often comes when you’re not actively chasing it.
Carve out time with yourself to go for walks, see some live music, visit a museum or just zone out on your sofa – you might just spark an idea when you’re deep in thought!

Stay connected with your creative community
The studios might be quiet, but your Spirit peers aren’t far away. Set up a group chat or mini online creative collab. You could swap samples, practice mixing and mastering each other’s beats or share playlists.
Taking a break doesn’t have to mean losing momentum. With a bit of prep and a few creative rituals, you can make the holidays a time to recharge and reignite your music making energy. Ready to hit the ground running next semester!
