A guide to student neighbourhoods in Manchester.

Manchester has been voted one of the best places to be a student, and one of the unique benefits are the diverse range of areas across the city. From the hustle of the city centre to the tree-lined streets of Didsbury, there’s a neighbourhood that will suit your tastes.

Fallowfield

Perhaps one of the most notorious student areas in the UK, home to thousands of students with house parties round every corner there’s always a buzz in the air.

It’s connected to the city centre by one of the busiest bus routes in Europe so there are buses 24/7. In terms of amenities there are a range of bars, pubs and restaurants as well as the iconic ‘big Sainsbury’s’ which is as much a student social space as it is a supermarket.

Platt fields park is a big asset to the area, a student hotspot on a sunny day filled with a the hum of portable speakers and BBQs.

Withington

5 minutes along Wilmslow Road is Withington, sister neighbourhood to Fallowfield with a similarly student heavy population and a bustling highstreet, with pubs, bars, cafe’s and shops. Arguably Withington is slightly more refined, having a vegetarian live music bar FUEL, family run café TOAST, Kyotoya an acclaimed Japanese restaurant and much more.

Withington also hosts XLR a popular nightclub which schedules a range of dance music events throughout the week.

Withington baths is a community fitness centre with swimming pool, gym, sauna, co-working space and café, all housed in a restored Edwardian baths building.

Salford

Bordering Manchester city centre is Salford, a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, and city in its own right. With a number of student areas and amenities surrounding the University of Salford campus there is a strong sense of community.

You can easily travel into central Manchester in less than 20 minutes by tram, train, bus or boat.

Salford Quays Media City is a waterfront cultural and entertainment hub home to Media City, The Lowry theatre, bars, restaurants, cinemas and shopping centres. There are a range of student housing developments and student houses throughout the quays.

In terms of nightlife Salford is home to arguably one of the best nightclubs in the UK, The White Hotel. Hailed a slice of Berlin in the UK, hosting stellar line-ups of underground dance music royalty with a 7am license the venue has become the premiere club in the North.

Northern Quarter

The cultural hub in the heart of the city is a hotspot for nightclubs, live music venues, record shops, bars, restaurants and just about anything else. With a strong cultural heritage dating back to the 80s you can find relics of the music and art entwined throughout it.

Stevenson square is the social hub of the city centre, lined with bars and beer gardens that truly erupt at the hint of a sunny day.

In terms of venues this is without doubt the place to be. Some are stooped in history, Band on the Wall has had music in its walls (literally) since the 1930’s and Stage and Radio since 1943. Others have hosted A-list artists from Ed Sheeran to the Arctic Monkeys.

Northern Quarter was also pivotal in dance music with record shops such as Eastern Bloc being responsible for breaking artists such as A Guy Called Gerald and K Klass.

Although it may not be the quietest neighbourhood the Northern Quarter is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and significant parts of the city.
