Independent Venue Week.

12 January, 2023

IVW emphasises the importance of smaller venues, and the need to protect them - particularly important after the unfortunate closure of so many venues due to the pandemic. Find out which venues are taking part in Manchester.

‘Independent Venue Week’ (known in short as IVW) is a seven day nation-wide celebration of independent music and arts venues, as well as the people that own, run and work in them. Each year over 200 independent venues take part in the celebration, with the number of those involved ever growing across the country. This year marks its 10th anniversary, taking place from the 30th January to the 5th February.

During the week, independent venues come together with artists, promoters, agents, record labels and media to create a unique series of live events to highlight the work these venues do year-round. By doing so, local communities come together and celebrate their local music scene. Crucially, the events put a spotlight on the vital role that these venues play.

“These venues give artists their first experience of performing live, give fans somewhere to discover and watch their favourite artists locally, and also provide those wanting a career off-stage the chance to learn their craft in a safe and secure environment.”

IVW showcases why venues are much more than just places for live music. They’re cultural hubs for learning, creativity, arts and culture. They connect people – from all walks of life – in their local communities.

Recently, Radiohead’s Philip Selway has been unveiled as the first 10th anniversary ambassador. In a statement he said:

“I’m honoured to be an Ambassador for IVW in their 10th Anniversary year. This past decade has seen IVW do incredible work in supporting and nurturing this vital musical community of independent venues. For me, these venues are the lifeblood of music in the UK, and after the great challenges they’ve faced these past few years, I’m excited to represent them in this way.”
