Perhaps one of the highlights of the year at Spirit is the Degree Show, where final year students from Music Production and Electronic Music Production and Performance bring together everything they’ve learnt to showcase their diverse talents. This year’s show had incredible variety and high quality throughout, here’s an overview of some of the amazing work that was shown.
Day 1
The opening night of the 2024 Degree Show showcased a variety of presentations and performances. The first part of the evening featured audio-visual listening parties and an interactive hip-hop demonstration hosted throughout the studios, followed by an eclectic schedule of live performances in the Venue. The listening parties explored a diverse range of genres and sounds including melodic ambient dreamscapes, dark gothic hardstyle EDM, reflective indie rock, experimental Lithuanian folk and a full history of hip-hop styles.
The live programming featured a range of DJ sets showcasing 100% student productions. These high energy DJ sets spanned a wide variety of dance music genres such as house, techno, dubstep and drum and bass. The night was hosted by first year student, Treks, who blew the audience away with a live rap performance of some upcoming tracks he has made collaborating with other students.
Day 2
The second part of the Degree Show exhibited 4 audio-visual presentations each uniquely immersive in their own right. Through intricately designed sound and video, viewers were transported from coming-of-age nostalgia to apocalyptic future worlds, neurological disorders and long forgotten spaces.
Day 3
The final day of the 2024 Degree Show was hosted at SOUP, an iconic venue in the heart of the Northern Quarter. The night featured a variety of live performances and DJ sets that encapsulated and excited the audience. Two live rap performances demonstrated the creative finesse of combining complex, impactful lyrics and wordplay with effortless performance and delivery. The DJ sets presented more of the students industry standard music, 100% self-produced. Exploring various styles of house and experimental UK bass music, accompanied by compelling visuals, the whole venue felt truly electric throughout.
We were blown away by all of the performances and seeing so many students coming together to support their peers. Congratulations to everyone involved.
